Westlands Academy

Westlands Academy is a secondary special school for students aged 11-16 who have Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties (SEMHD). Each of our 85 students has an Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP), formerly known as a Statement of Special Educational Needs (Behaviour). In November 2021, Ofsted judged Westlands Academy to be a good school. We are very proud of this.

We are located in Thornaby-on-Tees, which is part of Stockton-On-Tees Local Authority. Along with one of our other Trust academies, Green Gates (ages 4-11), we are the only schools in the borough that cater exclusively for young people with SEMHD and therefore, we have a special and important place within the community. The wider range of partnerships that we have developed all have a very positive impact on the school and its students. There are many exciting opportunities for students at Westlands. We recognise the importance of exposure to, and success, in English and Mathematics for all of our students. As a result, these subjects have the most curriculum time and we expect every student to achieve a nationally-recognised qualification in each of them. In addition to our core curriculum we offer a range of therapeutic, sport, craft, horticultural and workshop activities. We operate a broad and balanced curriculum, including many GCSE and vocational qualifications, which students work towards achieving at the end of Key Stage 4.
